Genital skin is sensitive. More cleaning is not always better. Fragrance, scrubbing, deodorants, and multiple new products can create or worsen irritation.

01

What to know

  • Wash gently with lukewarm water; avoid harsh or perfumed products on irritated skin.
  • If the foreskin retracts comfortably, gently clean and return it to its usual position. Never force it.
  • A retracted foreskin that is stuck behind the glans with swelling or pain is an emergency.
What people often get wrong

A similar-looking photo or one matching symptom cannot confirm a cause. Timing, change, examination, and sometimes testing matter.

02

Useful next steps

  • Pause new products and painful sexual activity while irritation settles.
  • Do not use prescription creams, antifungals, antibiotics, or steroid products without appropriate guidance when the cause is uncertain.

When to get care

Do not rely on guesswork when the pattern changes.

  • Seek care for pain while urinating, thick discharge, bleeding, repeated inflammation, or a tight painful foreskin.
  • Go to emergency care if the foreskin is trapped retracted and cannot be returned.

What a clinician may ask

  1. When did you first notice it, and is it changing?
  2. Is there pain, discharge, bleeding, fever, urinary change, or loss of function?
  3. Were there recent medicines, illness, injury, sexual contact, products, or procedures?
